Mu Ko Similan National Marine Park consists of 11 islands in the Andaman Sea, about 70 km from Phuket. It's one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in the world.
When to Go
The park is open from October 15 to May 15. During monsoon season (May-October) the islands are closed to visitors.
How to Get There
- From Phuket: speedboat (1.5-2 hours) or catamaran (3 hours)
- From Khao Lak: closer, about 1 hour by speedboat
Best to book a tour through an agency — transfer, equipment and lunch included.
Best Diving Spots
Richelieu Rock
One of the best sites for whale shark watching in Thailand. Underwater rock covered with soft corals.
Elephant Head Rock
Named after a rock resembling an elephant's head. Deep canyons and caves, lots of lionfish and rays.
West of Eden
Beautiful reef with huge coral formations. You can meet turtles and reef sharks here.
Snorkeling
For non-divers, snorkeling is also excellent. Clear water, colorful corals and lots of tropical fish.
Tips
- Book tour in advance in high season
- Bring sunscreen and water
- Don't touch corals and marine life
- Leave trash on the boat — nowhere to dispose on islands
- If prone to seasickness, take pills in advance
